The Hague
1869 – 1873 / 1881 – 1883
As a youth of 17, Vincent van Gogh obtained a position through his uncle Cent with the art dealers Goupil & Cie in The Hague. Here he got to know artists from the Hague School, who later served as inspiration for his own work. Ill-suited to life as a salesman, he was transferred to Goupil’s warehouse in London. Later, as a fledgling artist, he returned to The Hague and studied with his cousin, the successful painter Anton Mauve. Many nights were spent with fellow artist George Hendrik Breitner, drawing scenes of city life. He started a relationship with a prostitute, something his family found disgraceful. Under pressure, he left both her and The Hague. For three months he lived in isolation on the heath in Drenthe.
