Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

1889 – 1890
Within the walls of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, Vincent van Gogh painted detailed nature studies: irises, butterflies and pine trees in the garden. When he was allowed to venture outside the asylum, he painted landscapes with cypresses and olive groves. His famous ‘Starry Night’ is based on the view from the window of his room, combined with his own imagination and emotion. On learning that his brother Theo had had a son, he painted ‘Almond Blossom’ especially for him. This motif was inspired by the Japanese sakura blossom, the symbol of spring. Despite setbacks in his mental health, he was eventually declared to have recovered, and he was discharged. In consultation with Theo, it was decided that Vincent would move to a village outside Paris, where he could live and work under the supervision of Dr. Paul Gachet.
