Nuenen
1883 – 1885
In his last years in Holland, Vincent van Gogh worked in the East Brabant village of Nuenen. He painted weavers, landscapes with birch trees, mills and still lifes with bird’s nests. By now he was sufficiently skilled to take on his first genre piece. He chose the subject of a peasant family at mealtime. By way of preparation, he made various studies of ‘peasant characters’. He described the final result, ‘The Potato Eaters’, as his first masterpiece. People around him reacted negatively. After the local pastor urged locals to refuse to model for him, plus an unhappy affair with a neighbour and the death of his father, Vincent decided to join his brother Theo in Paris and to acquaint himself with Impressionism.
