Drenthe
1883
The heathlands of Drenthe reminded Van Gogh of the Brabant of his youth. He set to work for three months in the footsteps of painters he admired, such as Jozef Israëls and Max Liebermann. Here he painted dilapidated turf huts and fen landscapes against dark skies. However, the loneliness and poverty became too much for him and he decided to return to live with his parents, who had since moved to Nuenen.
